The Challenge in the Clinic

You Can Read the Tongue.
But Can You Treat From It?

Most practitioners were taught to note the tongue's colour and coating — and then largely set it aside when it came to choosing herbs or needles. The result is a quiet gap between what the tongue shows and what you actually do next. When the pathogenesis isn't clear, treatment decisions rest on the patient's description rather than on something you can see — and complex presentations are the hardest to read with confidence.

01

Pathogenesis That Stays Unclear

Conventional tongue diagnosis can leave the assessment of pathogenesis incomplete — so you are treating a pattern you can describe, but cannot fully locate.

02

Treatment Without Solid Evidence

When herbal prescriptions aren't anchored to clear, visible signs, even experienced practitioners can feel their best decisions rest on inference rather than evidence.

03

Complex Cases You Can't Catch Early

Conditions such as heart, thyroid and psychiatric presentations are difficult to identify early — the subtle signs are there, but conventional tongue reading often isn't precise enough to surface them.

Modern Tongue Diagnosis was built to close exactly this gap — between observing the tongue and prescribing Chinese herbal medicine through it.

What Is Modern Tongue Diagnosis?

One Photograph. The Entire Body, Mapped.

Modern Tongue Diagnosis (MTD) is a new discipline that integrates diagnosis and Chinese herbal medicine treatment. Developed by Dr Hongchun Yin from traditional tongue diagnosis, holographic biology, modern medicine and his own clinical discoveries, it gives you a precise read on disease location and pathogenesis — and clear, visible evidence for the herbal prescriptions you write. In a single tongue, you learn to see the Zang-Fu organs, the ascending and descending of Qi, the Six Meridians, and the direct correspondence between tongue signs and Chinese herbal formulas. The seminar also includes sessions on acupuncture direction for practitioners who use both modalities.

The Tongue Hologram & Midline Theory

  • The body lies along the tongue — head and face at the tip, the four limbs folded along the edges, the lower body at the root
  • The tongue midline maps to the Governor vessel and the spine — its deviations and breaks reveal where the Qi mechanism is disturbed
  • The three Jiao and Six Meridians, located precisely on the tongue surface
  • A relocated, holographically-accurate cardiac reflex zone — Dr Yin's pivotal discovery

Diagnosis-to-Treatment Mapping

  • Ten-Principle Differentiation — the classic Eight Principles plus Dr Yin's Ascending–Descending pair
  • Direct tongue-to-herb correspondence system — the primary treatment focus of the seminar; acupuncture direction is also covered
  • Patented tongue-diagnosis charts and tongue-based prescription formulas
  • Apply it within your existing modality — acupuncture, herbs or integrative practice

The tongue becomes a GPS — guiding your diagnosis and Chinese herbal medicine prescribing decisions in real time.

Why In Person

The Tongue Is Alive.
A Screen Can't Show You That.

The single biggest reason this seminar is taught in person: a real tongue is moving, moist and alive — and tongue colour shifts on screens. Online study can't let you assess the texture, moisture and living qualities that are critical diagnostic cues. Across the seminar you get roughly twenty minutes of hands-on tongue observation and diagnosis practice twice a day — the practical repetition that turns theory into a skill you can use on Monday morning.

Meet Dr Hongchun Yin

Dr Hongchun Yin
Founder of Modern Tongue Diagnostics · 38 years' clinical experience · WHO Health & Heritage Innovation finalist

Dr Hongchun Yin is the founder of Modern Tongue Diagnostics and the architect of the tongue hologram, the Tongue Midline Theory and the Ten-Principle Differentiation system. He graduated from Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1988, served as a deputy chief physician at Qingdao Hospital of TCM, and for more than two decades has practised at his own clinic in London.

Over thirty years of tongue research led to his pivotal breakthrough: revising the cardiac reflex zone and, from it, developing a complete holographic map of the body on the tongue. He holds multiple tongue-diagnosis patents, is the author of Modern Tongue Diagnostics in Chinese Medicine, and has trained more than a thousand practitioners worldwide. His teaching method centres on Chinese herbal medicine treatment derived directly from tongue diagnosis, with acupuncture direction covered as a complementary component.

In 2025 his work was selected as a finalist in the World Health Organization's Health & Heritage Innovation (H2I) Global Open Call and presented at the WHO Traditional Medicine Global Summit. He teaches with a sincerity his students return to again and again — answering every question, and holding nothing back.

A Method the World Is Taking Seriously

Modern Tongue Diagnosis is not a re-badging of traditional tongue reading — it is a distinct, documented system gaining recognition at the highest levels of global medicine.

WHO H2I Global Finalist

Selected from 1,175 submissions worldwide

In 2025, Modern Tongue Diagnostics was named one of just 21 finalists from 1,175 submissions across all WHO regions in the World Health Organization's Health & Heritage Innovation (H2I) Global Open Call, and was presented at the Second WHO Traditional Medicine Global Summit in New Delhi.

Dr Yin's contribution to the field has also been recognised with the Hua Tuo Award for medical science and a Global TCM Outstanding Contribution Award. He has trained more than a thousand practitioners worldwide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, more than a hundred members of the International MTD Association continued treating patients through remote, tongue-photo-based consultations — a vivid demonstration of how visible, objective and portable the method is.

What You'll Be Able to Read & Treat

A Diagnostic System That Spans the Whole Clinic

Tongue manifestation is the single thread that ties an unusually broad clinical scope together — from everyday complaints to the complex and early-stage presentations practitioners most often feel unsure about. The primary treatment focus across all conditions is Chinese herbal medicine; the seminar also includes acupuncture direction sessions.

Head & Sleep

Headache and migraine, insomnia, hair loss — read and treated from the tongue's upper field.

🫁

Heart & Lung

Cardiac and respiratory presentations — the focus of Dr Yin's cardiac reflex-zone discovery.

👂

ENT & Glands

Eye, ear, nose and throat; tonsil, parotid, cervical lymph nodes and head-and-neck glands.

🦋

Thyroid & Breast

Thyroid disorders and breast presentations, located on their holographic tongue zones.

🫀

Organ & Digestive

Gastric, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and diabetes, kidney, bladder and bowel conditions.

🌸

Reproductive Health

Female and male reproductive presentations, read through the tongue root and edges.

🌿

Skin & Complex Cases

🧭

Nine Palaces & Six Meridians

The structural frameworks that organise the whole system and its clinical application.

Read early through tongue manifestation, MTD turns the ancient principle of preventing disease before it occurs into concrete, clinical action.

FAQ

Common Questions

The training is presented in Chinese with English translation provided throughout all three days. Clinical discussions, case reasoning, technique instruction and Q&A are all translated in real time.
No. Modern Tongue Diagnosis integrates holographic biology, modern medicine, the Tongue Midline Theory and a direct diagnosis-to-treatment mapping. It locates disease more precisely, clarifies pathogenesis, and gives visible evidence for the herbs and points you choose — making it far more clinically actionable than conventional tongue reading.
No. The system is taught from first principles, and Dr Yin teaches practitioners at every level — from beginners to those with decades of experience. You will build the framework step by step across the three days.
The seminar's primary treatment focus is Chinese herbal medicine — the vast majority of the treatment content covers tongue-to-herb prescribing. There are also dedicated sessions on acupuncture direction, so acupuncturists will gain practical tongue-based guidance for point selection. If you work only with acupuncture and not herbs, it's worth knowing upfront that most of the treatment lectures are herbal. Many acupuncturists still find the diagnostic framework alone extremely valuable — and for those open to exploring herbs, it opens a clear, practical gateway.
Almost certainly. Experienced practitioners — including one with 36 years in practice — describe gaining immediate, valuable clinical insight, because MTD makes visible what conventional tongue reading leaves to inference.
Yes. Students consistently report applying MTD straight after the seminar — beginning to scan the whole body through a single tongue and connect what they see directly to treatment decisions. Skill and confidence then grow with use.
Because a tongue is alive — moving, moist, and textured — and its colour shifts on screens. These living qualities are critical diagnostic cues you can only assess in the room. The seminar includes roughly twenty minutes of hands-on tongue practice twice a day for exactly this reason.
The seminar is primarily designed for Chinese medicine practitioners and herbalists who want to translate tongue diagnosis directly into Chinese herbal medicine prescribing. Acupuncturists will also find value in the diagnostic framework and the dedicated acupuncture direction sessions, though it's worth noting that the majority of the treatment content is herbal. Western-trained doctors and allied-health professionals with an interest in tongue-based diagnosis are also welcome.
